Northern Lights Tours in Rovaniemi: Which Are Worth It with Kids?

Our research · we didn’t do this one

We saw the lights from our resort and skipped the tour. Here’s what we weighed up.

We didn’t do this one. This is the research we compiled when deciding whether to add it to our itinerary. Every fact is from the sources listed at the bottom. We watched from Apukka instead. See our northern lights guide.

Do you need a tour to see the northern lights in Rovaniemi?

Not always. We saw them on several nights from Apukka Resort without one.

A tour helps when it’s cloudy where you’re staying (guides drive to find clear sky) or when your hotel sits in town under streetlights. If your resort is out of town with dark skies, try watching from there first.

What kinds of northern lights tours are there in Rovaniemi?

Minibus aurora hunts, electric snowmobile and electric reindeer safaris, evenings in a lakeside cottage or aurora cabin, e-fatbike hunts and photography workshops.

Visit Rovaniemi lists over 100 aurora-related activities. Operators include Lapland Safaris, SnowTrail Safaris, Porovaara Reindeer Hill, StayLapland, Lapland Royal Adventures, Nordic Adventures and Bliss Adventure.

How much do northern lights tours cost in Rovaniemi?

Only the prices we could still see on the operator’s own page in November 2026 are in the table below.

In October 2026 Visit Rovaniemi showed a long list of “from” prices, including minibus hunts, an Aurora Pass and a private Santa evening. Those figures were not on the pages we opened again, so they are left off rather than repeated. Prices checked November 2026.

Which northern lights tours are best with kids?

Shorter tours with a warm base, like a cottage or aurora cabin with a campfire, beat long nights on a bus or snowmobile.

Aurora tours run late by nature. Apukka’s Aurora Snow Train, for example, leaves at 7:45 p.m. or 8:30 p.m. and lasts three hours, which is why we skipped it. Check the start time and length against your kids’ bedtime, and check age limits on anything with snowmobiles.

The multi-night Aurora Pass is worth a look if the lights are the whole point of your trip: one cloudy night doesn’t cost you your only chance.

Is there a northern lights tour for parents only?

We saw a couples listing that included a babysitter. We didn’t book it, and we are not repeating a price we could not recheck.

If a late tour is the only way the two of you get an evening out, ask the operator what the babysitter actually covers before you pay. We stayed in and watched from the cabin instead.

How do you know when the northern lights are out?

Use an aurora alert app; Visit Rovaniemi points to a Northern Lights Alert app with real-time alerts.

Some hotels, like the glass igloos at Santa’s Igloos and the Arctic SnowHotel, have aurora alarms in the room.

Which northern lights tour prices could we verify?

Apukka’s own departures, and the menu at Rovaniemi Safari Center in the village. Not the long “from €89” list we saw in October.

A tour is optional. We saw the lights from Apukka on several nights and skipped the late bus. Buy a tour if you are sleeping in town, if the cloud is sitting on your hotel, or if you want someone else to drive. Don’t buy one as insurance on top of a glass-roof cabin unless you like leaving a warm room to stand in a colder field. Prices checked November 2026.

Ages were not printed on the Safari Center menu, so those cells stay blank. Durations were. Apukka’s snowtrain is the one we were offered and refused. It is now listed daily at 20:30.

What do kids ride, and what do adults drive?

On a lights tour, assume the child is a passenger. The only driving we did at night was none.

Apukka’s night snowmobile is an adult product. A child has to be 15 and at least 140 cm, and even then they sit behind a licensed adult. The driver is 18 or over, with a license valid in Finland. The family snowmobile, which is a daytime tour, puts kids in the sled. Neither is a “kids drive the snowmobile under the aurora” product. The Safari Center snowmobile aurora trips don’t print an age on the menu page. Ask before you pay, and assume 18 to drive until they tell you otherwise.

Husky sleds are the same split in daylight: adults mush, children sit. We would not put a child on the driving position of anything, lights or not, to get a photo. The activity review has the daytime version of this, including the mini snowmobile weight limit.

What should you book before you arrive?

A tour on a short trip, if you are staying in town. Nothing, if you have several nights outside town and a glass roof.

December tours go first because the town is full, not because the sky is better. If you only have two nights and a city hotel, book one hunt for the clearer-looking evening and keep the other night empty so you can move it. If you have four nights at Apukka, as we did, book the daytime joy and let the lights be the thing you don’t schedule. The photo session and the reindeer visit were the scarce daytime bookings. The sky was not.

Refund rules differ. Apukka’s snowmobile pages say you can cancel up to 24 hours ahead for a full refund. A lights tour that only runs when the forecast is good, which is how Apukka describes one of its aurora hunts, is a different promise from a tour that goes out anyway. Read that line. “Guaranteed lights” usually means a refund or another night, not a switch that turns the aurora on. We didn’t need the clause. We also didn’t need the tour. The forecast habit is on the northern lights page.

More questions

Do you need a northern lights tour in Rovaniemi?

Not if you are sleeping outside town with a dark sky, which is what we had at Apukka. Yes if you are in the centre under streetlights, or you only have one or two nights and you want someone to drive toward clear sky.

What time do lights tours leave?

The ones we could verify leave late. Apukka’s snowtrain and night snowmobile are both at 20:30. That was too late for our kids. Check the clock before the price.

Can kids ride a snowmobile on a lights tour?

At Apukka, only if they are at least 15 and 140 cm, and then as a passenger. The driver is 18 or over with a license valid in Finland. Smaller children belong on a daytime sled tour, or in bed.

Why aren’t the October prices still on this page?

Because we could not see them again in November 2026. Minibus “from” prices, an Aurora Pass and a private Santa evening were on Visit Rovaniemi in October. Those numbers are not repeated here. The table is only what was still printed on Apukka’s site and at Rovaniemi Safari Center.

What should we book before the flight?

If the lights are the whole trip and you have few nights, one tour. If you have a cabin outside town, book the daytime activities and the photo session instead. We booked no lights tour and did not regret it.
