Santa Claus Village at dusk with the Christmas tree and Arctic Circle marker, Rovaniemi

Santa Claus Village Review: Is It Worth It with Kids?

Santa’s official hometown, right on the Arctic Circle. Honestly? It was a miss for us.

Our verdict

Not an essential stop unless your resort doesn’t offer Santa visits or activities. The kids loved the playground and crossing the Arctic Circle, but the shops felt generic.

What we loved

  • Crossing the Arctic Circle
  • The playground
  • Appearing on the live feed
  • Our private Piparina gingerbread cabin

What we’d change

  • Generic shops selling the same items
  • Few festive snacks or holiday drinks
  • The Santa Post Office was closed when we went
  • Slow service at Three Elves

Is Santa Claus Village worth visiting?

For us it was a miss. It’s not essential unless your resort doesn’t offer Santa visits or activities.

We didn’t wait in line for Santa, since we had already met him on Apukka’s Reindeer Ride to Santa. Most of the shops felt like generic variety stores selling the same items over and over. I wish there were themed shops (ornaments, artisan crafts) and more festive snack stands or holiday drinks.

What did our kids like most?

The playground, crossing the Arctic Circle, and seeing themselves on the live feed.

The Arctic Circle line runs right through the village’s central square, so crossing it is part of every visit.

Can you rent a private gingerbread cabin at Santa Claus Village?

Yes. We rented the Piparina private gingerbread cabin for three hours and had snacks delivered.

The service was great and it was a cozy place to warm up between wandering around.

Is the Santa Claus Main Post Office worth seeing?

It was closed when we visited, for reasons we never found out, so check before you go.

Posti, the Finnish postal service, says the office receives nearly half a million letters a year, and mail sent from it gets a special Arctic Circle postmark.

How do you get to Santa Claus Village from Apukka or Rovaniemi?

From Apukka it’s about a 10-minute drive. From Rovaniemi, take local bus 8, which runs year-round.

Apukka offers a bus (€20 when we went), but we took a taxi (€35) to follow our own schedule. Our driver, Pyry, who works with the resort’s recommended taxi company, was wonderful, safe and reliable. Look for him if you need a taxi.

The village is 8 km north of Rovaniemi city center and 3 km from the airport. From November to March, the Santa’s & Airport Express also links the village, the city and the airport.

Where should you eat at Santa Claus Village?

We had Thanksgiving dinner at Three Elves: slow service and just okay food.

Another missed opportunity for Christmas theming.

Santa Claus Village or SantaPark?

SantaPark, for us. We loved it.

Read our SantaPark review for why the VEP tour was worth it.

What does Santa Claus Village cost?

Walking in is free. Meeting Santa is free. The photo, the Express Pass, Snowman World and the certificate are not.

Arctic Circle certificateClassic €5, golden €6Sold at Rovaniemi Safari Center in the village. About 5 minutes. We didn’t buy one

We didn’t pay an entrance fee because there isn’t one. We also didn’t meet Santa here, because we had already met him on Apukka’s reindeer ride, so we didn’t buy the photo package either. The prices below are what the operators published, not a receipt from our afternoon. Prices checked November 2026.

The regular meeting is a queue, then Santa, then a choice about buying the pictures. Santa’s photographer takes a photo of every visit and the meeting is also filmed. You don’t have to buy them. The Express Pass is a different product: a booked time, a private meeting, and the digital photos and video included. It is not a skip-the-line coupon you add at the door for a few euros.

What time does Santa Claus Village open, and when should you arrive?

The village is open every day. Santa’s office is not open all night. In the Christmas rush, go in the morning.

Santa Claus Office publishes the meeting as free, with no ticket, and says December is the most popular time. They recommend arriving in the morning to get an entry time and a place in the queue. They do not publish “the wait is 90 minutes,” so we won’t either. We didn’t queue. If you only have the afternoon in the week of Christmas, assume you may not get in, and look at the Express Pass or at SantaPark instead.

Office hours we could read for the 2026 to 2027 winter were: 24 October to 15 November, 10:00 to 18:00. 16 to 29 November, 09:00 to 19:00. 30 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, 08:00 to 20:00. 4 January to 31 March 2027, 09:00 to 18:00. The main post office was listed 10:00 to 19:00 in November and 09:00 to 20:00 from 1 December through 6 January. It was closed when we visited, for reasons we never learned, so check that morning. Snowman World doesn’t open until 6 December, then runs 10:00 to 20:00 through 6 January and 11:00 to 19:00 until 17 March, weather permitting.

How long should you spend, and how do you get there?

We didn’t need a full day. The playground, the Arctic Circle and a warm cabin were the parts our kids used.

If your resort already did Santa, this is a two or three hour wander, not a pilgrimage. We rented the Piparina gingerbread cabin for three hours and had snacks delivered, which was the best decision we made on site, because it gave us somewhere to take the suits off. The shops felt like the same souvenir wall repeated. Three Elves, where we ate Thanksgiving dinner, was slow and the food was only okay.

From Apukka it was about 10 minutes. The resort bus was quoted at €20 and our taxi was €35, in November 2025. From the city, bus 8 runs all year. The village is 8 kilometres north of the centre and 3 kilometres from the airport. From November to March the Santa’s & Airport Express also runs. Parking at the village is there. We didn’t drive. More of the logistics are on getting to Lapland.

Santa Claus Village or SantaPark?

SantaPark, for us. The village is free to enter and easy to be disappointed by. SantaPark costs money and felt like Christmas.

Our verdictSkip if your hotel already does SantaDo this one if you only have time for one

The full argument for the cave is our SantaPark review. The short version: we would spend the paid afternoon underground and use the village only if we wanted the Arctic Circle photo or the post office. We already had Santa.

More questions

Is Santa Claus Village open all year?

Yes. The village is open every day of the year, and you can meet Santa every day.

Is Santa Claus Village free?

Yes. There is no entrance fee, and meeting Santa is free. You pay if you buy the photos, the Express Pass, Snowman World, a certificate, or anything in the shops.

How long is the line to meet Santa?

Santa’s office doesn’t publish a wait time. They do say December is the busiest month and that you should arrive in the morning. We didn’t queue, because we had already met Santa at our resort.

Is the Christmas Express Pass worth €500?

We didn’t buy it. It is a private, pre-booked meeting for a family of up to eight, about five minutes with Santa, with digital photos and video included. It is worth it only if a guaranteed time in December matters more than €500. Otherwise meet him for free, early, or go to SantaPark.

What time should we arrive?

In late November through early January, morning. The office is open 08:00 to 20:00 from 30 November to 3 January. Outside those weeks the hours are shorter, and the queue is the reason to go early, not the gate.

Is Snowman World included?

No. It is €35 a person, under 2 free, and it is outdoors. It opens 6 December 2026 and runs until 17 March 2027 if the weather allows. It is not a reason to visit the village in November, which is when we went.
