Everything we did in four days, ranked by our kids, plus what we looked into and skipped.
What are the best things to do in Rovaniemi with kids?
From our trip: a husky ride, the Reindeer Ride to Santa, SantaPark, and watching for the northern lights.
- 3 km husky ride: our favorite. The adults drove their own sleds
- Reindeer Ride to Santa: a private family visit with elves, gingerbread baking and games
- SantaPark with the VEP tour: absolutely worth it, thanks to Elf Judy
- The northern lights: we saw them on several nights from our resort
- Snow & Fun, sauna and jacuzzi, a mini pony ride: easy wins for younger kids
Full reviews: Apukka activities, SantaPark, northern lights.
What would we skip in Rovaniemi?
Santa Claus Village, if your resort already does a Santa visit, and family snowmobiling for younger kids.
Our kids liked the playground and crossing the Arctic Circle, but the shops were generic. Here’s our honest take. Snowmobiling was great for the adults, but the kids spent too long waiting in the kid boxes.
Do you need to book a northern lights tour?
We didn’t. We watched from Apukka and skipped the late-night Aurora Snow Train.
If you do want one, we compared the options and prices in our northern lights tours guide.
How many days do you need in Rovaniemi with kids?
We had four nights and it felt right: enough for a resort package, SantaPark, Santa Claus Village and several chances at the northern lights.
Several nights also matter for the aurora, since one cloudy night shouldn’t be your only shot.
What is there to do in Rovaniemi besides the resort and Santa?
A wildlife park, a museum, a ski hill, a pool, a forest activity park, and one playground that doesn’t charge. We did not do this list.
The ranking at the top of this page is what our family actually did. Everything in this section is research for a next trip, or for a day you don’t want to spend on another safari. We didn’t make it to Ranua, and we didn’t ski Ounasvaara. If a price or an age isn’t in the table, the operator didn’t publish it on the page we checked. Prices checked November 2026.
Science Centre Pilke is not on the list. Pilke’s own site says the science centre closed permanently on 2 October 2026. Don’t plan a visit, and don’t budget the old ticket.
How much do Rovaniemi attractions cost, and do you need to book?
Book Ranua and SantaPark if you care about the price or the date. The museum and the pool can be bought at the door. Angry Birds is free.

| SantaPark | From €42 adult, €37 child 3 to 12, under 3 free, plus a booking fee | Child price is 3 to 12 | Sold as a full day | Yes if you want a date and the VEP upgrade |
Kotatieva also listed Aurora Skating at €79 and a larger “Kotatieva Experience” at €329. The day ticket’s own price was not in the text we could read, so it is not in the table. What the park says is included: snowshoeing, skating, a sledding hill, snow play and a reindeer meet. The sleigh ride is extra, and a shuttle is advertised from the city centre and from Santa Claus Village. We have not been, so this is the menu, not a review. Arktikum’s December to February hours are daily 10:00 to 18:00. Ounasvaara’s posted exceptions include a short day on 24 December and different hours over Christmas and late March.
Is Ranua Wildlife Park worth a day with kids?
We didn’t make it to Ranua, but it is the real arctic-animal day near Rovaniemi, and it is not a Santa add-on.
Ranua Resort’s wildlife park sells tickets through 31 March 2027 at the prices in the table. You can buy them at the gate. The online price is lower, and the web shop adds a €1 service fee per order. Children under 4 don’t need a ticket. Dogs aren’t allowed in the park, and the on-site dog kennels are closed from November through February, which matters if you were thinking of combining it with a drive. We weren’t traveling with a dog.
The park says winter hours, September through May, are 10:00 to 16:00, and summer hours, June through August, are 10:00 to 18:00. It doesn’t publish a “you need three hours” line, so we won’t invent one. It is an outdoor walk between enclosures. That makes it a poor very-cold-day plan and a good use of a milder, brighter day in February or March. Pair it with a place to stay that doesn’t already fill every hour with a resort package, or you will not go.
Is Arktikum worth it with kids?
As a warm, serious museum hour, yes. As a theme park, no. We didn’t go inside.
Arktikum is the science centre and museum on the river in town. The 2026 ticket page asks you to allow 1 to 2 hours and to arrive at least an hour before closing. A family ticket for two adults and two children is €54, which is less than buying four separate tickets if your children are in the 7 to 17 band at €10 each. Under 7 is free. The audio guide is included and free to open.
We walked past that part of town only in the sense that we know the building. Our days were at Apukka, SantaPark and the village. If it is -25°C and the kids are done with the outdoors, Arktikum is the indoor stop we would use. The Arctic Garden in front of it is also the free lights spot on the northern lights page. You can do the museum in the afternoon and come back to the riverbank after dinner if the sky is clear. That is a plan, not a night we spent.
Can you sled or ski at Ounasvaara with kids?
The ski resort publishes lift tickets, rentals and a kids’ park. We didn’t ski or sled there.
Ounasvaara is the hill across the river from the centre. The resort’s 2026 to 2027 price list is the one in the table. A parent joint day ticket is €79 and covers one parent at a time. Rental of skis or a snowboard, boots, poles and a helmet matches the lift prices for a day. Private lessons start at 45 minutes for children 4 to 6, and there is a Mini Start lesson listed for children under 4 in Rendi Park. Group lessons, when they run, need the child to be over 7. Book the school by email. We didn’t.
We don’t have a separate price for a public sledding hill, so we are not going to call the sledding free or cheap. Rendi Park is the beginner area, and a season pass for that park alone is a different product from the main lifts. If your children are small and you only want an hour on a gentle slope, ask the ticket window which area the ticket actually opens. For a very cold day, trade the hill for SantaSport’s pool instead.
What are SantaSport and Kotatieva actually for?
SantaSport is the indoor pool and sports hall. Kotatieva is a forest park with a shuttle and a reindeer. We used neither.
SantaSport’s spa has a lane pool, a children’s pool with a small slide, hot pools, and a cold pool they compare to ice swimming. The family ticket is €26 for two adults and two children. Our kids would have been one in the 3 to 7 band and one in the 8 to 16 band if we had bought singles, and the family ticket is the simpler sum. You have to be out of the water 15 minutes before close. Towel or swimsuit rental is €8 if you didn’t pack either. This is the best very-cold indoor hour we found that isn’t a museum or SantaPark.
Kotatieva sells itself as one forest for skating, sledding, snowshoes and a reindeer greeting, with the ride priced separately at €40. The shuttle from the centre and from Santa Claus Village is the reason it can work without a car. We already had reindeer at Apukka, in a private ride to Santa, so we didn’t go looking for another farm. If your hotel doesn’t include animals, Kotatieva or a reindeer ride at Apukka is the decision, not both.
What is free or cheap, and what works on a very cold day?
Angry Birds is the free playground. The lights are free if the sky cooperates. On a bitter day, go indoors.
Visit Rovaniemi describes Angry Birds Activity Park as a free outdoor playground in the centre, next to the river, with rope walks and slides, and says it works from toddlers up. It does not publish hours. We didn’t go, and we wouldn’t choose it at -25°C. Crossing the Arctic Circle and meeting Santa are also free. The photo, the certificate and Snowman World are not. A classic Arctic Circle certificate at Rovaniemi Safari Center in the village is €5, and the golden one is €6. We didn’t buy one.
Very cold day, in the order we would use: SantaPark if it is still open, Arktikum, SantaSport’s spa, then the hotel restaurant and sauna. Leave Ranua, Ounasvaara, Angry Birds, Kotatieva and Snowman World for a day when being outside for an hour sounds fun. Snowman World is ice slides and skating in the open, and the site already warns that weather can close it. Our own cold-day win was simpler. We went back to the cabin.

More questions
How many days do you need in Rovaniemi with kids?
Four nights was enough for the resort, SantaPark, the village and more than one night of lights. Add a fifth day if you want Ranua or Ounasvaara. We didn’t, and the trip didn’t feel short.
What can toddlers do in Rovaniemi?
SantaPark is free under 3, Ranua is free under 4, and SantaSport’s spa is free under 3. Apukka’s infants ride free on many tours but have to sit with an adult. Angry Birds is the free outdoor playground. A toddler will not enjoy a late lights tour. Keep those nights short or watch from the room.
Do you have to book everything before you arrive?
No. Book SantaPark if the date matters, and book resort safaris if you are there in December. Arktikum, Ranua, the ski hill and the pool can be decided the same day. Angry Birds needs nothing.
Is Pilke still open?
No. Science Centre Pilke says it closed permanently on 2 October 2026. We are not listing a ticket price for a museum you cannot visit.
What should we do when it is too cold to stay outside?
SantaPark, Arktikum and the SantaSport spa. Not Ranua, not the ski hill, and not Snowman World, which is outdoors and weather dependent.
