The location is close to the airport but away from the busiest tourist areas, the Aurora Family Cabin worked perfectly for two adults and two kids, and we saw the northern lights on several nights. Service was very good rather than luxury: about 4 stars." > Brooke Banville, 4.5/5. Source: https://banvoyage.com/winter/lapland/apukka-resort/ ## FAQ ### Can you see the northern lights from Apukka Resort? Yes, if the sky is clear and the aurora is active. We saw them on several nights in late November 2025. ### Can kids drive the snowmobile at Apukka? No. The driver must be at least 18, with a license valid in Finland. Children 4 to 14 ride in a heated sled. Ages 5 to 10, under 50 kg, can try a mini snowmobile alone. A parent is not allowed to drive the mini with the child. The night safari needs a child to be 15 and 140 cm, riding as a passenger. ## SameAs - YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@The.BanVoyage - Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thebanvoyage/ - TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@the.banvoyage - Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/thebanvoyage/ - Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/the.banvoyage ## KnowsAbout - [Finnish Lapland](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lapland_(Finland)) - [Rovaniemi](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rovaniemi) - [Aurora](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aurora) ## Contact BanVoyage Email: hello@banvoyage.com https://banvoyage.com/about/ # Detailed Content ## Our Lapland Trip: Rovaniemi, Finland - **URL:** https://banvoyage.com/winter/lapland/ - **When:** November 2025 - **BanVoyage Rating:** 4.5/5 In late November 2025 we took our kids, then 9 and 6, to Rovaniemi in Finnish Lapland, aka the North Pole. We flew from Philadelphia via Dublin, stayed four nights in an Aurora Family Cabin at Apukka Resort, drove our own husky sleds, rode a reindeer sleigh to meet Santa in an enchanted forest, and saw the northern lights on several nights. Here is everything from the trip, one post per stop, answered the way we wish someone had answered it for us. This is the page we wish we had read before we booked. It is a family guide, not a catalog of every tour in Lapland. Where we did something, we say so. Where we only researched it, that is marked too. Our daughter and our son were 9 and 6 on the trip. They are 10 and 7 now. Start here, then drop into the stop you actually need: things to do in Rovaniemi, where to stay, getting to Lapland from the US, the northern lights, northern lights tours, Santa Claus Village and SantaPark. The whole trip also lives with our family trips. ## Apukka Resort Review: Our Family Stay in an Aurora Family Cabin - **URL:** https://banvoyage.com/winter/lapland/apukka-resort/ - **Type:** first-hand review - **BanVoyage Rating:** 4.5/5 (Apukka Resort) - **Byline:** By Brooke Banville · We stayed November 25 to 29, 2025, with our kids, then 9 and 6 Four nights in a glass-walled family cabin outside Rovaniemi, with northern lights on several of them. Verdict: We loved Apukka. The location is close to the airport but away from the busiest tourist areas, the Aurora Family Cabin worked perfectly for two adults and two kids, and we saw the northern lights on several nights. Service was very good rather than luxury: about 4 stars. Loved: The Aurora Family Cabin layout and very comfortable beds; Location: 20 minutes from the airport; The husky ride and the Reindeer Ride to Santa; Northern lights on several nights Would change: The restaurant was understaffed; Walkways got icy and dangerous on our last night; Our cabin was a walk from reception and the restaurant; A small kids’ area with few board games Quick facts: - We stayed: November 25 to 29, 2025 - Our room: Aurora Family Cabin - Who: 2 adults, 2 kids (then 9 and 6) - Package: Apukka Early Winter Fun + add-ons - From the airport: About 20 minutes - To Santa Claus Village: About 10 minutes - To SantaPark: About 15 minutes - Our service rating: About 4 out of 5 Q: Is Apukka Resort good for families? A: Yes. We would go back with our kids. Q: Where does everyone sleep in the Aurora Family Cabin? A: There is a separate bedroom with a queen bed, a queen sofa bed, and a king bed beneath the panoramic windows. Q: How far is Apukka from the airport, Santa Claus Village and SantaPark? A: About 20 minutes from Rovaniemi Airport, 10 minutes from Santa Claus Village and 15 minutes from SantaPark. Q: Which Apukka package did we book? A: The Apukka Early Winter Fun package, plus the 3 km Husky Ride, Family Snowmobile and the Sauna & Jacuzzi experience. Q: What is the food like at Apukka? A: We enjoyed the food. Breakfast is included, and you can do half-board buffet dinners or order à la carte. Q: What should you wear at Apukka, and what do they provide? A: Apukka gives you a list of what they supply, including a giant snowsuit. Bring your own thermals, hats, gloves and balaclavas. Q: What didn’t we like about Apukka? A: The understaffed restaurant, icy walkways on our last night, and a small kids’ area. Q: What do we wish we’d known before booking? A: Book a family photo session in advance. It was completely sold out once we arrived. Q: What other rooms does Apukka have? A: Aurora Cabins in several sizes, Komsio and Kammi glass igloo suites, Lakeview Suites and Villa Apukka. Q: Can you see the northern lights from Apukka Resort? A: Yes, if the sky is clear and the aurora is active. We saw them on several nights in late November 2025. Verdict: The 3 km husky ride and the Reindeer Ride to Santa were the highlights. Family snowmobiling was great for the adults but not for the kids. Loved: 3 km Husky Ride; Reindeer Ride to Santa (Enchanted Forest); Snow & Fun; Sauna & jacuzzi Would change: Family snowmobiling: long waits in the kid boxes; Aurora Snow Train: too late for young kids Quick facts: - Our favorite: 3 km Husky Ride - Most magical: Reindeer Ride to Santa - Great for adults only: Family Snowmobiling - Skipped: Aurora Snow Train (too late for kids) - How we booked: Early Winter Fun package + add-ons Q: Is the Apukka husky ride worth it? A: Yes. The 3 km Husky Ride was amazing, and the adults got to drive their own sleds. Q: What is the Reindeer Ride to Santa at Apukka? A: A reindeer ride to a private family visit with Santa in the Enchanted Forest, with elves, gingerbread baking, card writing and games. It was magical. Q: Is family snowmobiling at Apukka good for kids? A: Great for adults, not so much for kids. Q: What is Apukka Snow & Fun? A: A four-hour session of winter activities for the whole family. Q: Is the sauna and jacuzzi experience OK with kids? A: Yes. It was lovely and relaxing, and the kids enjoyed it too. Q: Is the mini pony ride worth doing? A: It’s short, about 10 minutes, but very cute and fun. Q: Should you do the Aurora Snow Train with kids? A: We skipped it. Tours leave at 7:45 p.m. or 8:30 p.m. and last three hours, which was too late for our kids. Q: What do Apukka’s activities cost now, and who can ride? A: The menu below is Apukka’s 2026 to 2027 list, not the invoice from our November 2025 package. Adults drive the husky sled and the full-size snowmobile. Kids ride. Q: What should you book before you arrive? A: The photo session, the husky ride, the reindeer visit, and anything on a December morning. Not the snowtrain, if your kids are young. Q: Can kids drive the snowmobile at Apukka? A: No. Q: Do kids drive the husky sled? A: The adults do. Apukka says the guides do not drive either. Children ride in the sled. A single adult with more than one child should read the age rules before booking, because the oldest child may have to be 12. Q: What should we book before we land? A: The photo session first. Ours was gone. Then the husky ride and the reindeer visit with Santa. Leave the 20:30 snowtrain off the list if the kids are under 10. Q: Is the reindeer ride still worth it at the current price? A: It was the best hour of our trip. The family-of-four price on the menu now is about €1,124 to €1,172, which is a lot of money for a ride and a private Santa visit. We would still choose it over a second snowmobile. We would not choose it and SantaPark’s VEP and the village Express Pass in the same week. Pick one Santa. Q: Did the kids like the snowmobile? A: The adults did. The kids were bored by the waiting. They liked the mini snowmobiles afterward, and it wasn’t enough to rescue the hour. Snow & Fun was the better kid product. Verdict: We loved SantaPark. The VEP tour was phenomenal and absolutely worth it, even if we wished the price included skipping the entry and Elf School lines. Loved: The VEP (Very Elfish Person) tour; Elf Judy; Bilingual English-Finnish Christmas books Would change: VEP doesn’t skip the entry line; VEP doesn’t skip the Elf School line Quick facts: - Our verdict: Absolutely worth it - We booked: The VEP (Very Elfish Person) tour - Arrive: At opening (we did) - From Apukka: About 15 minutes - From the airport: About 2 km - 2026 winter season opens: October 31, 2026 Q: Is SantaPark worth it? A: Yes. We loved SantaPark, and it was the better Santa experience of our two (sorry, Santa Claus Village). Q: What is the SantaPark VEP tour, and is it worth the price? A: The Very Elfish Person tour is SantaPark’s guided package with express access to Santa. Ours was phenomenal and absolutely worth it. Q: When should you arrive at SantaPark? A: At opening. That’s what we did, and we’d do it again. Q: What is there to do inside SantaPark? A: Elf School, the Elf Show, the Elf Workshop, Mrs. Gingerbread’s Bakery, the Magic Train Ride, Santa’s Office and Post Office, and the Toy Factory shops. Q: What souvenir is worth buying at SantaPark? A: We bought bilingual English-Finnish Christmas books, and they’ll be treasured keepsakes. Q: SantaPark or Santa Claus Village? A: SantaPark. If you only have time for one, do this one. Q: When is SantaPark open? A: For winter 2026, Santa and the elves return on October 31, 2026. Q: What is the difference between a SantaPark ticket and the VEP pass? A: The ticket gets you in and includes Santa. The VEP pass, for a family of four, adds a fast line to Santa, lunch, a printed photo and a pile of small ceremonies. It does not, in our experience, skip the front door or Elf School. Q: When is SantaPark open, and what time should you arrive? A: For winter 2026 to 2027, from 31 October to 23 January. We arrived at opening and would do that again. Q: How long do you need, and what ages is it best for? A: It is sold as a full day. Our kids, then 9 and 6, were the right age for Elf School. Under 3 is free and will not do the diploma. Q: Is SantaPark underground? A: Yes. SantaPark is built inside a cavern near Rovaniemi Airport. Q: Is the VEP pass worth it? A: For us, yes. Elf Judy made the day, and the fast line to Santa was the part we had paid for. It was not worth it as a promise to skip every line. We still queued to get in, and we still queued for Elf School. If your only goal is meeting Santa, a regular ticket includes that meeting. Buy VEP if you want the lunch, the printed photo, the gingerbread and a guide-shaped elf, and you have checked today’s price, because the site didn’t show us one. Q: Does VEP skip the line? A: It skips the regular line to meet Santa. That is what SantaPark says, and it matches what we got. It did not skip the entry line or the Elf School line on our visit. Read “priority” as Santa, not as the whole building. Q: How much is SantaPark? A: Entrance starts at €42 for an adult and €37 for a child aged 3 to 12. Under 3 is free. A booking fee is added. The VEP pass price was not on the page we checked in November 2026, so it is not on this one either. Q: What ages is SantaPark best for? A: Our kids, then 9 and 6, were fully in it. The priced child band is 3 to 12. Younger siblings get in free and will enjoy the train more than Elf School. Q: Is SantaPark open in February? A: Not in the 2026 to 2027 season. The published close is 23 January 2027. February is for snow, the lights and the ski hill, not for this cavern. Honestly? It was a miss for us. Verdict: Not an essential stop unless your resort doesn’t offer Santa visits or activities. The kids loved the playground and crossing the Arctic Circle, but the shops felt generic. Loved: Crossing the Arctic Circle; The playground; Appearing on the live feed; Our private Piparina gingerbread cabin Would change: Generic shops selling the same items; Few festive snacks or holiday drinks; The Santa Post Office was closed when we went; Slow service at Three Elves Quick facts: - Our verdict: Skippable if your resort does Santa - Where: On the Arctic Circle, 8 km (5 miles) north of Rovaniemi - From Apukka: About 10 minutes by taxi - What we paid: Taxi €35; Apukka’s bus was €20 (Nov 2025) - Open: Every day of the year - Public bus: Line 8 year-round; Santa’s & Airport Express Nov to Mar Q: Is Santa Claus Village worth visiting? A: For us it was a miss. It’s not essential unless your resort doesn’t offer Santa visits or activities. Q: What did our kids like most? A: The playground, crossing the Arctic Circle, and seeing themselves on the live feed. Q: Can you rent a private gingerbread cabin at Santa Claus Village? A: Yes. We rented the Piparina private gingerbread cabin for three hours and had snacks delivered. Q: Is the Santa Claus Main Post Office worth seeing? A: It was closed when we visited, for reasons we never found out, so check before you go. Q: How do you get to Santa Claus Village from Apukka or Rovaniemi? A: From Apukka it’s about a 10-minute drive. From Rovaniemi, take local bus 8, which runs year-round. Q: Where should you eat at Santa Claus Village? A: We had Thanksgiving dinner at Three Elves: slow service and just okay food. Q: Santa Claus Village or SantaPark? A: SantaPark, for us. We loved it. Q: What does Santa Claus Village cost? A: Walking in is free. Meeting Santa is free. The photo, the Express Pass, Snowman World and the certificate are not. Q: What time does Santa Claus Village open, and when should you arrive? A: The village is open every day. Santa’s office is not open all night. In the Christmas rush, go in the morning. Q: How long should you spend, and how do you get there? A: We didn’t need a full day. The playground, the Arctic Circle and a warm cabin were the parts our kids used. Q: Santa Claus Village or SantaPark? A: SantaPark, for us. The village is free to enter and easy to be disappointed by. SantaPark costs money and felt like Christmas. Q: Is Santa Claus Village open all year? A: Yes. The village is open every day of the year, and you can meet Santa every day. Q: Is Santa Claus Village free? A: Yes. There is no entrance fee, and meeting Santa is free. You pay if you buy the photos, the Express Pass, Snowman World, a certificate, or anything in the shops. Q: How long is the line to meet Santa? A: Santa’s office doesn’t publish a wait time. They do say December is the busiest month and that you should arrive in the morning. We didn’t queue, because we had already met Santa at our resort. Q: Is the Christmas Express Pass worth €500? A: We didn’t buy it. It is a private, pre-booked meeting for a family of up to eight, about five minutes with Santa, with digital photos and video included. It is worth it only if a guaranteed time in December matters more than €500. Otherwise meet him for free, early, or go to SantaPark. Q: What time should we arrive? A: In late November through early January, morning. The office is open 08:00 to 20:00 from 30 November to 3 January. Outside those weeks the hours are shorter, and the queue is the reason to go early, not the gate. Q: Is Snowman World included? A: No. It is €35 a person, under 2 free, and it is outdoors. It opens 6 December 2026 and runs until 17 March 2027 if the weather allows. It is not a reason to visit the village in November, which is when we went. Quick facts: - Season: Late August to early April - How often: About 150 nights a year in Finnish Lapland, when conditions allow - You need: Darkness, clear skies and some patience - Daylight: December 2.5 h · January 4 h · February 8 h · March 12 h - When we saw them: Several nights, November 25 to 29, 2025 Q: Did we see the northern lights in Lapland in November? A: Yes, on several nights. The lights were stunning, truly magical. Q: When is northern lights season in Rovaniemi? A: From late August to early April. Q: What is the best month to see the northern lights with kids? A: Late November to March: snow, Santa, and long dark nights. Q: Do you need a northern lights tour? A: Not necessarily. We saw them from the resort, and skipped the late-night Aurora Snow Train. Q: How do you see the northern lights with kids? A: Give yourself several nights, stay somewhere you can watch from inside, and dress for real cold. Q: Which month has the best chance of northern lights with kids? A: Any month from late August to early April can work. With kids, we would take February or March over the Christmas crowds, and we would not bet on a single night. Q: What is the Kp index, and which forecast should you trust? A: Kp is a 0 to 9 scale of geomagnetic activity. It is not a promise of lights over your cabin, and cloud matters as much as the number. Q: What time of night should you watch? A: FMI says the typical time is midnight, and a couple of hours before and after. That is about 22:00 to 02:00. The lights can also show up whenever the sky is dark. Q: Where can you see the northern lights for free? A: We saw them from Apukka, which we had already paid to sleep at. In town, Visit Rovaniemi points to the Arctic Garden by Arktikum. Ounasvaara is the hill if you need to get above the streetlights. Q: How many nights do you need, and how do you photograph the lights with a phone? A: More than one night. Every photo on this page is a phone photo. We used the phone’s night mode and we didn’t pack a tripod lecture. Q: How do you keep kids warm that late? A: Watch from inside first. If you go out, it is a short stand in full winter gear, not a picnic. Q: What time are the northern lights in Rovaniemi? A: The Finnish Meteorological Institute says a typical display is around midnight, a couple of hours before and after, which is about 22:00 to 02:00. They can appear any time the sky is dark enough. In December that is most of the night. Q: What is a good Kp for Rovaniemi? A: Higher is more active, and Kp runs from 0 to 9. FMI does not publish a magic Rovaniemi cutoff. A modest number and a clear sky beat a high number under cloud. We didn’t chase a number. We looked up. Q: Which app should we use? A: The Finnish Meteorological Institute aurora service, plus a cloud forecast. FMI already folds in NOAA space-weather alerts. We are not endorsing a third-party app we didn’t rely on. Q: Can you see the northern lights for free? A: Yes. We saw them from our resort without a tour. In town, Visit Rovaniemi points to the Arctic Garden by Arktikum. Ounasvaara is the hill above the streetlights. We didn’t watch from either of those two. Q: How many nights do you need? A: At least three if the lights are the point, four if you can. We had four and saw them on several. One booked tour is one chance. Q: Do kids have to stay out until 2 a.m.? A: No. Watch from the room, or go out for a short look and come in. We skipped a three-hour late tour and still saw the lights from bed. Quick facts: - Our route: Philadelphia → Dublin → Rovaniemi - Dublin to Rovaniemi: Ryanair, round trip - Flight time: About 3 hours - Airport to Apukka: About 20 minutes - Arrive at RVN: At least 1 h 45 min before a Ryanair flight Q: How did we get to Lapland from the US? A: We flew Philadelphia to Dublin, spent five days with friends and family in Ireland, then took a round-trip Ryanair flight from Dublin to Rovaniemi. Q: How long is the flight from Dublin to Rovaniemi? A: About three hours. Q: How far is Rovaniemi Airport from the resorts? A: Our resort, Apukka, was only 20 minutes from the airport. Q: When should you get to Rovaniemi Airport for a Ryanair flight? A: At least 1 hour 45 minutes before your flight. Bag drop was slow, security was slow, and we felt rushed. Q: How did we get around once we were there? A: By taxi, so we could keep our own schedule. Q: How do you get to Lapland from the US? A: Almost everyone connects. Finnair’s own path is via Helsinki, and the village says that flight runs every day of the year. Q: Is the overnight Santa Claus Express worth it with kids? A: It is a real option from Helsinki, and we didn’t take it. VR runs it. The hours depend on the date. Q: How do you get from Rovaniemi Airport to the hotel? A: Taxi, the winter airport bus, or a resort shuttle. The village is 3 kilometres from the airport. The city is 8. Q: Should you rent a car in winter? A: We didn’t. Rent one for Ranua or for chasing the lights, not for SantaPark. Q: How bad is the jet lag with kids? A: In winter, Finland is 7 hours ahead of US Eastern Time and 10 hours ahead of US Pacific Time. The Dublin stop is how we dealt with it. Q: How did we actually fly? A: Philadelphia to Dublin, five days, then Ryanair to Rovaniemi and a 20-minute taxi to Apukka. Q: What is the usual way from the US to Rovaniemi? A: A connection. Finnair via Helsinki is the straightforward one, and Santa Claus Village says that Helsinki to Rovaniemi flight runs daily, all year. We flew via Dublin instead, on purpose. Q: How long is the train from Helsinki to Rovaniemi? A: VR says the fastest journey is 8 hours 22 minutes, over about 820 kilometres. The Santa Claus Express overnight train is a seat or a sleeper, and the exact departure is in VR’s trip search. We didn’t take it. Q: Do you need a car from the airport? A: No. The village is 3 kilometres from the airport and 8 kilometres from the city. Bus 8 runs all year. A winter airport express runs November to March. We used a taxi. A car is for Ranua or for driving after dark, which we didn’t do. Q: How bad is jet lag from the East Coast? A: Finland is 7 hours ahead of US Eastern Time in winter, and 10 hours ahead of the West Coast. We buffered it with five days in Dublin. If you don’t have a buffer, don’t book a late tour on night one. Q: How early should you be at Rovaniemi Airport? A: For our Ryanair flight, at least 1 hour 45 minutes. Bag drop and security were both slow. Bring snacks and buy water before passport control. Before booking, we compared these. Quick facts: - Where we stayed: Apukka Resort, Aurora Family Cabin - Walk to SantaPark: Arctic TreeHouse Hotel - Walk to Santa Claus Village: Santa’s Igloos, Arctic TreeHouse - Snow hotel: Arctic SnowHotel (Dec 15 to Mar 31) Q: Where did we stay in Rovaniemi? A: Apukka Resort, in an Aurora Family Cabin. We’d book it again. Q: How do the Rovaniemi hotels compare? A: They split into resorts with activities built in, and hotels you can walk to Santa from. Q: Should you stay in Rovaniemi city or outside it? A: Outside, if the northern lights and winter activities are the point; in town, if you want restaurants and lower prices. Q: Which Rovaniemi hotels are best for a family of four or more? A: Apukka’s Aurora Cabin Family sleeps up to six; Arctic TreeHouse has connecting family suites and two-bedroom GlassHouses. Q: Which hotels are closest to Santa? A: Santa’s Igloos is about 600 m from Santa Claus Village, and Arctic TreeHouse is next to SantaPark. Q: Which area of Rovaniemi should a family stay in? A: Outside town if the lights and the activities are the trip. In town if you want restaurants and the bus. On the hill if you came to ski. Q: How do the prices compare, by budget? A: We are not going to invent nightly rates. The split is real even without a euro sign: a town room, a glass roof next to Santa, or a resort that bundles the activities. Q: How many people does each place sleep? A: Ask for the bed diagram in writing. “Sleeps four” and “has a sofa” are not the same sentence. Q: Is there a minimum stay, and do you need a car? A: We didn’t find a published minimum night on the hotel pages we checked. We also didn’t need a car. Q: Should we stay in Rovaniemi city centre? A: Stay in the centre if you want restaurants and bus 8, and you are relaxed about the lights. Stay outside if the lights are the point. Streetlights make a weak aurora hard to see. We stayed outside and would do it again. Q: What is the best area for Santa Claus Village? A: Santa’s Igloos is about 600 metres from the village. The Arctic TreeHouse is next to SantaPark and within walking distance of the village. We liked SantaPark much more than the village, so the TreeHouse location is the one we would pick if we were not going back to Apukka. Q: How many nights minimum? A: We didn’t find a published minimum on the pages we checked. Four nights felt right for us. Ask specifically about Christmas week, when demand is highest and a short stay is the first thing to get awkward. Q: Can you do this trip without a car? A: Yes. We did. Taxis, bus 8, and the winter airport express cover the village and SantaPark. You want a car for Ranua, or if you plan to drive around after dark looking for clear sky. We didn’t. Q: Which hotel sleeps a family of four for sure? A: Our Apukka Aurora Family Cabin did, with a separate bedroom. The TreeHouse connecting suites and the two-bedroom GlassHouse are the researched alternative. For Santa’s Igloos, get the bed count in writing before you pay. The public pages we checked don’t publish it. Quick facts: - Our favorite: 3 km husky ride - Most magical: Reindeer Ride to Santa - Worth the money: SantaPark VEP tour - Skippable: Santa Claus Village (if your resort does Santa) - Free: The northern lights, if the sky cooperates Q: What are the best things to do in Rovaniemi with kids? A: From our trip: a husky ride, the Reindeer Ride to Santa, SantaPark, and watching for the northern lights. Q: What would we skip in Rovaniemi? A: Santa Claus Village, if your resort already does a Santa visit, and family snowmobiling for younger kids. Q: Do you need to book a northern lights tour? A: We didn’t. We watched from Apukka and skipped the late-night Aurora Snow Train. Q: How many days do you need in Rovaniemi with kids? A: We had four nights and it felt right: enough for a resort package, SantaPark, Santa Claus Village and several chances at the northern lights. Q: What is there to do in Rovaniemi besides the resort and Santa? A: A wildlife park, a museum, a ski hill, a pool, a forest activity park, and one playground that doesn’t charge. We did not do this list. Q: How much do Rovaniemi attractions cost, and do you need to book? A: Book Ranua and SantaPark if you care about the price or the date. The museum and the pool can be bought at the door. Angry Birds is free. Q: Is Ranua Wildlife Park worth a day with kids? A: We didn’t make it to Ranua, but it is the real arctic-animal day near Rovaniemi, and it is not a Santa add-on. Q: Is Arktikum worth it with kids? A: As a warm, serious museum hour, yes. As a theme park, no. We didn’t go inside. Q: Can you sled or ski at Ounasvaara with kids? A: The ski resort publishes lift tickets, rentals and a kids’ park. We didn’t ski or sled there. Q: What are SantaSport and Kotatieva actually for? A: SantaSport is the indoor pool and sports hall. Kotatieva is a forest park with a shuttle and a reindeer. We used neither. Q: What is free or cheap, and what works on a very cold day? A: Angry Birds is the free playground. The lights are free if the sky cooperates. On a bitter day, go indoors. Q: How many days do you need in Rovaniemi with kids? A: Four nights was enough for the resort, SantaPark, the village and more than one night of lights. Add a fifth day if you want Ranua or Ounasvaara. We didn’t, and the trip didn’t feel short. Q: What can toddlers do in Rovaniemi? A: SantaPark is free under 3, Ranua is free under 4, and SantaSport’s spa is free under 3. Apukka’s infants ride free on many tours but have to sit with an adult. Angry Birds is the free outdoor playground. A toddler will not enjoy a late lights tour. Keep those nights short or watch from the room. Q: Do you have to book everything before you arrive? A: No. Book SantaPark if the date matters, and book resort safaris if you are there in December. Arktikum, Ranua, the ski hill and the pool can be decided the same day. Angry Birds needs nothing. Q: Is Pilke still open? A: No. Science Centre Pilke says it closed permanently on 2 October 2026. We are not listing a ticket price for a museum you cannot visit. Q: What should we do when it is too cold to stay outside? A: SantaPark, Arktikum and the SantaSport spa. Not Ranua, not the ski hill, and not Snowman World, which is outdoors and weather dependent. Quick facts: - Address: Tarvantie 3, Arctic Circle, Rovaniemi - SantaPark: Next door, about 100 m - Santa Claus Village: Within walking distance - Rooms: Arctic TreeHouse Suites, Arctic GlassHouses, ArcticScene Executive Suites - Family option: 7 suites with a kitchenette can connect to form a family suite - Restaurant: Rakas (Finnish for “beloved”) Q: What is the Arctic TreeHouse Hotel? A: A forest hotel on the Arctic Circle in Rovaniemi, with suites built around floor-to-ceiling windows facing the trees and the northern sky. Q: Where does everyone sleep at the Arctic TreeHouse Hotel? A: Families have two main options: connecting TreeHouse Suites, or an Arctic GlassHouse with two bedrooms. Q: How close is the Arctic TreeHouse Hotel to SantaPark and Santa Claus Village? A: SantaPark is next door, about 100 m away, and Santa Claus Village is within walking distance. Q: Where do you eat at the Arctic TreeHouse Hotel? A: At Rakas, the hotel’s restaurant. The name is Finnish for “beloved.” Q: Arctic TreeHouse Hotel or Apukka Resort? A: It depends on whether you want to walk to Santa or have the activities on your doorstep. A: A hotel of 71 glass-roofed, air-conditioned igloos at Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi, run by Santa’s Hotels. Q: Can you see the northern lights from Santa’s Igloos? A: Yes, through the glass roof, and an aurora alarm tells you when they appear. Q: Where does everyone sleep in a Santa’s Igloos igloo? A: The pages we checked don’t publish bed setups or how many people each igloo sleeps, so confirm before booking with kids. Q: How close is Santa’s Igloos to Santa Claus Village? A: About 600 m, so you can walk. Q: Santa’s Igloos or Apukka Resort? A: Santa’s Igloos if you want to walk to Santa Claus Village; Apukka if you want a resort with the activities built in. A: The snow rooms stay between 0°C and -5°C (32°F to 23°F), whatever the weather outside. Q: What are the glass igloos at the Arctic SnowHotel like? A: Warm rooms with motorized beds, a private bathroom with shower, underfloor heating and an aurora alarm. Q: Can kids sleep in the snow hotel? A: The hotel’s pages we checked don’t say, so ask about age limits before you book. Q: When is the Arctic SnowHotel open? A: The snow hotel is open December 15 to March 31; the glass igloos September 1 to March 31. Q: Where do you eat and what else is there? A: There’s an Ice Restaurant for dinner, an Ice Bar serving drinks in ice glasses, and what the hotel calls the world’s only snow sauna. Here’s what we weighed up. Quick facts: - Season: Late August to early or mid April - We booked: No tour. We watched from Apukka - Tour types: Minibus, snowmobile, reindeer, cottage, photography - Book ahead: Yes, if the lights are the point of a short trip - Prices checked: November 2026 Q: Do you need a tour to see the northern lights in Rovaniemi? A: Not always. We saw them on several nights from Apukka Resort without one. Q: What kinds of northern lights tours are there in Rovaniemi? A: Minibus aurora hunts, electric snowmobile and electric reindeer safaris, evenings in a lakeside cottage or aurora cabin, e-fatbike hunts and photography workshops. Q: How much do northern lights tours cost in Rovaniemi? A: Only the prices we could still see on the operator’s own page in November 2026 are in the table below. Q: Which northern lights tours are best with kids? A: Shorter tours with a warm base, like a cottage or aurora cabin with a campfire, beat long nights on a bus or snowmobile. Q: Is there a northern lights tour for parents only? A: We saw a couples listing that included a babysitter. We didn’t book it, and we are not repeating a price we could not recheck. Q: How do you know when the northern lights are out? A: Use an aurora alert app; Visit Rovaniemi points to a Northern Lights Alert app with real-time alerts. Q: Which northern lights tour prices could we verify? A: Apukka’s own departures, and the menu at Rovaniemi Safari Center in the village. Not the long “from €89” list we saw in October. Q: What do kids ride, and what do adults drive? A: On a lights tour, assume the child is a passenger. The only driving we did at night was none. Q: What should you book before you arrive? A: A tour on a short trip, if you are staying in town. Nothing, if you have several nights outside town and a glass roof. Q: Do you need a northern lights tour in Rovaniemi? A: Not if you are sleeping outside town with a dark sky, which is what we had at Apukka. Yes if you are in the centre under streetlights, or you only have one or two nights and you want someone to drive toward clear sky. Q: What time do lights tours leave? A: The ones we could verify leave late. Apukka’s snowtrain and night snowmobile are both at 20:30. That was too late for our kids. Check the clock before the price. Q: Can kids ride a snowmobile on a lights tour? A: At Apukka, only if they are at least 15 and 140 cm, and then as a passenger. The driver is 18 or over with a license valid in Finland. Smaller children belong on a daytime sled tour, or in bed. Q: Why aren’t the October prices still on this page? A: Because we could not see them again in November 2026. Minibus “from” prices, an Aurora Pass and a private Santa evening were on Visit Rovaniemi in October. Those numbers are not repeated here. The table is only what was still printed on Apukka’s site and at Rovaniemi Safari Center. Q: What should we book before the flight? A: If the lights are the whole trip and you have few nights, one tour. If you have a cabin outside town, book the daytime activities and the photo session instead. We booked no lights tour and did not regret it.
